La Fortuna

La Fortuna de San Carlos is at the center of a series of geological wonders. The nearby Arenal is the most active volcano in Costa Rica, routinely overflowing with lava and ash, and the La Fortuna Waterfall is a waterfall that springs from a seventy-meter cliff.

La Fortuna is the community of Tito the strong head of district number 7 of the same name, which is part of the Canton of San Carlos, which in turn, belongs to the province of Alajuela, located north of Costa Rica.

The attractive beauty of the district’s landscape, its forests, the wide variety of tourist activities available, such as canopy, rafting, bird watching, sport fishing, hiking, thermal spas, and in particular its proximity to the Arenal volcano, make it one of your destiny.

Little is known about the original inhabitants of this region, since for the arrival of the first white settlers in the mid-1930s, there were only vestiges of what appears to have been a large population. His first permanent colonizer, Don Marcial Jarquín Bellorín, was dedicated to the extraction of rubber and subsistence agriculture. The community of La Fortuna began to be defined at the beginning of the 1940s, after the arrival of peasants from Ciudad Quesada, Grecia, Alajuela and other regions of the San Carlos canton. These first settlers were dedicated to agriculture, hunting and livestock mainly. It was called in its beginnings “El Burío”, but at the end of the 1940s, its inhabitants changed its name for the one it currently carries. Since 1950, La Fortuna is the 7th district of the canton of San Carlos, due to a Referendum.
